BBC helps Women in Technology

I am so glad that the BBC have recognized the problem that women have, less than half of women work in Science and in Technology!
The BBC is holding an event in London, that offers women job opportunities in subjects like Technology and Science, because more and more women are fighting for positions in these industries! I think its brilliant that more women are becoming interested and more organisations like the BBC are helping us!

I recently attended a Wikipedia V Girl geeks event in Bristol, where Wikipedia asked women why they do not edit on Wikipedia and the results were interesting. It was my first event and I am proud to say that I am a girl Geek :) I am interested in Science and Technology, and enjoy the same "geeky" programmes as men do.

I think more organisations need to realise what women can offer and so we can show off our abilities!

Vogue Italia

Having read today that Italian Vogue have created a "salve" collection and displayed it on their website, i was shocked to say the least.
I thought we lived in a modern society, where talk of slaves were understood as a bad thing, and women have finally managed to break free from this captivity.
They said that the style was "slave" because this the style women wore during the African holocaust. They created gold/silver hoops like many women did, and are not only parading them in their magazine/on-line they seem to be proud of this collection! Of course the reaction has been big and many many people and organisations have spoken out and said how "disgusting" it was to create and sell such things.
Vogue has apologised and said that they have now changed the name to "Ethnic collection", because according to editor Franca Sozzani it was just bad translation from Italian to English.
Personally, I think "Ethnic" is still a poor choice of words and "slave" certainly does not translate to "ethnic". Its not much better, i dont see why they have to refer to this collection as ethnic or any sort of similar words, what will they think of next? I do not think Vogue intended to be racist or harmful in anyway , but they certainly didn't think it through did they?
Vogue is a respectable fashion magazine that thousands of women buy as a part of their daily routine, what kind of message are they sending out?
I really hope the apology draws a line under this whole mess, and Vogue think ahead before coming up with another offensive named collection!

Slutwalks are Worldwide

I cannot believe how many women are participating in the "Slutwalks" all over the world! I think its brilliant that women are fighting for this. It isn't right that some men think that Women are attacked because of their clothing, perhaps it attracts men, but its not reason to hurt women! We can wear what we want without being called a "slut" for it! Its ridiculous!
I am so glad that women all over the world support this campaign, and I do hope men get this message now.
Being called a "slut" is so offensive and hurtful to any woman, and it is not okay for anyone to call anyone else this horrible name. It even sounds nasty!
"Femen" is an organisation in Ukraine that helps women who suffer from domestic or sexual abuse, who are sure to support the "Slutwalks". Its practically a worldwide event by now, that appears to be stretching out everywhere, and many women seem to act against this! We should definitely fight for this right!

Standing Up for Mexcian Women Victims

I recently researched and wrote an article regarding the Exhibtion "400 Women" by Tamsyn Challenger that is on display at the Edinburgh Art Festival. The exhibiton shows 400 portaits of Women that are victims of abuse, rape or murder as this is a growing concern in South Aamerica. The article I wrote is the link above under the title!

The art Festival is ongoing from August 4th - September 4th and I urge women and men of all ages to go see this exhibiton! Seen as I am busy the next 6 weeks, I cannot go, and am quite disappointed actually as I woudl have loved to seen it!

I think Tamsyn Challenger is inspirational, and has really captured the victims and how this has effected them, and has raised awareness of the crimes in Mexico. Unless any of these topics such as rape, are heard in our socitey or where we live, I dont think we think a lot about it.
To actually write about it and choose to display it in oublic, is brave and admirable as we shoudl all be aware to stop these crimes happening.
